The candidates who are recruited as employees in Group X and Y are called PBOR (Person below Officer Rank) or Airmen. The candidates who are recruited as Airmen in Group X work in the technical fields subject to their trade while the candidates who are recruited Airmen in Group Y will work in other streams other than technical.

IAF Airmen Group X and Y Exam Dates
The online exam for Airmen Group X and Group Y has been scheduled from 4th November 2020 as per the official notification that was released earlier. The exam will be conducted from 4th to 8th November for recruiting eligible candidates for the 01/2021 Batch.
Salary of the IAF Airmen in Group X and Y
When the candidates are selected by IAF for the Airmen in Group X and Y then they are subjected to training. During the training period, the Airmen in both the groups X and Y are given a stipend of Rs. 14,600. Once, the training is completed, the Airmen in the Group X are given Rs.33,100 per month. The Dearness Allowance (DA) is given as applicable. The candidates who get selected as the Airmen in the Group Y are given Rs.26,900 per month. The Dearness Allowance (DA) is given as applicable. The salary eventually rises in the subsequent years. The Dearness Allowance for both Group X and Y is calculated on the sum total of Pay Band + Grade Pay + MSP. Military Service Pay (MSP) is given to all the Airmen on a per month basis.

Not only this, after retirement, the Airmen are also entitled to the pension, medical insurance and gratuity, apart from the canteen facilities. Besides this, Indian Air Force allows relaxation in age and reservation in government services as an ex-serviceman.
Promotion Prospects of IAF Airmen Group X and Group Y
With the passage of time and experience, Airmen are also promoted to the higher ranks during their stay in the Air Force. Also, the eligible Airmen can apply for the selection as an Officer in the Flying Branch within the age group of 19 to 20 years. Serving Airmen can also apply for the selection to the Officer’s rank in the Ground Duty Branches (other than Medical).
The promotion policy in IAF is based on the following:
(a) Annual Appraisal Report (AAR /AR/ACR): The basis for promotion is the 'Annual Appraisal report (AAR)' that is given every year by the Superior or the Senior Officer under whom the Airmen work. It is applicable for all the ranks in IAF.
(b) Promotion Exams: Apart from Annual Appraisal report, the Airmen are required to clear promotion exams that are conducted for their next promotion. These exams are conducted to assess that the Airmen have the essential knowledge required, on Air Force law, service writing, administration and military history apart from professional knowledge.
(c) Minimum service: The next is the 'minimum service' in a given rank that is considered while promoting any Airmen.This is a necessary requirement for promotion. The minimum service presently in vogue is as follows:

IAF Airmen Group X and Y: Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility varies as per the Group of trade that the candidate selects. Group 'X' Airmen for Technical Trades require a 10+2 with PCM or a Diploma in Engineering from a recognised institute or university. For Group 'X' Education Instructor Trade, candidates need a Graduation and a B. Ed. / Two years teaching experience in the field. For Group 'Y' Trades (police, defence etc.), candidates require a 10+2 or equivalent in any of the streams, Science, Arts or Commerce. Here is the detail of the eligibility qualifications that is required:
Nationality: Indian and Nepalese
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Unmarried
Upper Age Limit: 21 Years
Educational Qualification:
(a) Group X (except Education Instructor Trade)
(i) Passed Intermediate/10+2/Equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English.
OR
(ii) Passed Three years Diploma Course in Engineering in any stream. The candidate should have completed the course from a Government recognised Polytechnic institute or University with 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English in diploma or in Intermediate/Matriculation, if English is not a subject in Diploma Course.
(b) Group Y (except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P), IAF(S) and Musician Trades)
Passed Intermediate/10+2/ Equivalent Examination in any stream/subjects approved by Central/State Education Boards with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and at least 50% marks in English.
(c) Group Y (Medical Assistant Trade Only)
Passed 10+2/Intermediate/equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English subjects with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and at least 50% marks in English.
Medical Standards
General Medical Standards for both Group X (except Education Instructor Trade) and Group Y (except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P), IAF(S) and Musician Trades) are as follows:
(i)Height: Minimum acceptable height is 152.5 cms.
(ii) Chest: Minimum range of expansion: 5 cm.
(iii) Weight: Proportionate to height and age. However, the minimum weight of 55 Kg required for an Operations Assistant (ATS) Trade only.
(iv) Corneal Surgery (PRK/LASIK) shall not be acceptable.
(v) Hearing: Candidate should have normal hearing, i.e. able to hear a forced whisper from a distance of 6 meters with each ear separately.
(vi) Dental: Candidates should have healthy gums, a good set of teeth and minimum 14 dental points.
(vii) Health: Candidate should be of normal anatomy without loss of any appendages. He should be free from any active or latent, acute or chronic, medical or surgical disability or infection and skin ailments. The candidate shall be physically and mentally fit to perform duty in any part of the world, in any climate and terrain.
IAF Airmen Group X and Y: Exam Pattern
Phase-I (Online Exam)
Phase 1 is the online exam that is conducted. The eligible candidates are sent Provisional Admit Cards for Phase-I Details of the Online Exam are given below:
(a) Group X Trades (except Education Instructor): Duration of the online test is 60 minutes and comprises English, Physics and Mathematics.
(b) Group Y Trades (except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P), IAF(S) and Musician): Duration of the online test is 45 minutes and comprises English, Reasoning & General Awareness.
(c) Both Group X & Y Trades: Duration of the online test is 85 minutes and comprises English, Physics, Mathematics, and Reasoning & General Awareness.
Note: The exam has a provision of negative marking also. For each correct answer, one mark will be awarded while for every wrong answer 0.25 marks is deducted as penalty. If the candidate leaves the question without marking any answer then no mark will be awarded for the same.
Phase-II (Physical Fitness Test)
As soon as the Phase- I results are declared, all candidates who are shortlisted for Phase-II will be sent a new admit card on their registered email for phase-II test at an Airmen Selection Centre. Candidates should have all the required documents when they are appearing for the Phase – II exam.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) criteria are as follows:
-
1.6 Km run to be completed within 06 minutes 30 seconds.
-
Candidates shall also have to complete 10 Pushups, 10 Sit-ups and 20 Squats within the stipulated time to qualify in the Physical Fitness Test.
Note: Candidates are advised to bring their sports shoes and shorts/Track pants along with them. Candidates shall sign a consent form prior to appearing in Physical Fitness Test/Medical Test for selection in IAF. He shall appear in these tests on his own risk and shall not be paid any compensation by the IAF for injury/casualty, if any, sustained by him during such tests. The Consent Form shall be signed by his Parents/Guardian of candidates below 18 years of age.
Phase-III (Medical Examination)
Candidates who qualify the Physical Fitness Test are issued a medical appointment letter for their medical examination at designated Medical Boarding Centre (MBC) on a specified date. Medical Examination shall be conducted by the Air Force Medical Team as per IAF medical standards and policy. Medical examination would include Baseline Investigation of:
(a) Blood Haemogram - Hb, TLC, DLC
(b) Urine RE/ME
(c) Biochemistry: Blood Sugar Fasting & PP, Serum Cholesterol, Urea, Uric acid, Creatinine, LFT- Serum Bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT
(d) X- Ray Chest (PA view)
(e) ECG (R)
IAF Airmen Group X and Y: Syllabus
The syllabus for the Airmen Group X and Group Y exam is the same as that of the syllabus of the 10+2 of CBSE. So, it is advisable that the candidates study as per the CBSE 10+2 syllabus.
