The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are public engineering institutes and also are autonomous public institutes of higher education. The Indian Institute of Technology Act, passed on September 15, 1956 by the Central Government of India and by so the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) became the Institutes of National Importance. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) was the third IIT, established by the Union Government of India with the assistance of Government of West Germany in the year of 1959. It was the first Indo-German venture and the technical, academic and financial assistance was also provided by the Govt. of west Germany to it. Now it is also an autonomous public institute of higher education like other IITs within the Indian Institute of Technology Act. IIT Madras has 16 academic departments and in it's various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences also has a few research centers.
