Important Question from chapter 6 : Water Resources

Important Question from chapter 6 : Water Resources

Q-It is said that the water resources in India have been depleting very fast. Discuss the factors responsible for depletion of water resources?

A- Due to rising demand and decreasing resources brought on by overuse and pollution, water shortage may present the biggest issue. Due to population growth, the amount of water available per person is decreasing daily. Additionally, industrial, agricultural, and home effluents are polluting the existing water resources, which is further reducing the amount of usable water resources.

A significant amount of some states' groundwater potential is used up, which causes groundwater depletion in some states. Groundwater fluoride content has increased due to over withdrawals in various states, including Rajasthan and Maharashtra, and this practise has also caused an increase in arsenic concentration in some areas of West Bengal and Bihar. Foreign substances including microorganisms, chemicals, industrial, residential, and other wastes cause water to become contaminated. Toxic compounds dissolve or are suspended in water when they enter lakes, streams, rivers, the ocean, and other bodies of water. This causes water pollution, which degrades water quality and affects aquatic systems. These toxins occasionally seep into the earth and contaminate the groundwater. The two most contaminated rivers in the nation are the Ganga and the Yamuna.
