The economically Weaker section is the un-reserved section of Indian society other than SCs, STs, and OBCs having annual family incomes less than 8 lakhs. EWS was introduced for the general category to provide the privileges, reserved category get in education and job employment. One thing to remember is that EWS does not include people belonging to caste categories SC/ST/OBC who already enjoy reservation privileges. Basically, the Economically weaker Section (EWS) is that un-reserved section of society whose annual family is less than 8 lakhs. It focuses on the population that doesn’t get covered in the 50% reservation policy for Scheduled castes (SCs), Scheduled tribes (STs), and Other backward classes (OBCs).  

When EWS was implemented?

EWS came into force when Supreme Court declared a 10% reservation to the Economically Weaker Section in education and public employment under the 103rd amendment act, 2019. The articles amended were Article 15 and Article 16. It enables both Central as well as state governments to provide reservations to EWS.

Who comes under EWS?

As mentioned above, EWS was introduced for the General category but even for the general category, there is an eligibility criterion to leverage the benefits under EWS. Here is a list of conditions to be fulfilled to come under EWS:

  • The first and foremost condition is, you must fall in the general category and not be covered in SC, ST, and OBC sections. Also, the MBC category of Tamil Nadu is not included in EWS. 
  • Secondly, the annual income of the family should not be more than 8 lakh rupees including all sources of income. 
  • Thirdly, If you have any agricultural land then it should not be more than 5 acres. 
  • Fourthly, You should not have any residential apartment having an area of more than 1000 square feet. 
  • Lastly, your residential plot should not be located in a designated municipality sector, more than 100 square yards. 

If you are meeting all the above points then you come in the Economically weaker section category. 

Benefits Economically weaker section gets:

The Economic Weaker Section gets relaxation while applying for government jobs and while taking admissions to government Educational Institute. Students from the general category can benefit from a 10% reservation under the EWS quota. 

The students in the EWS quota have separate cutoffs and get admission to colleges accordingly.
