Calculation of marks is a significant part of school and college life. There are numerous ways to gauge your marks. However, the frequently used approach to calculate marks is the GPA (Grade Point Average) method. One of the components of this method looks a little puzzling. However, an extremely easy method is the conversion from SGPA to CGPA. Although the notion of SGPA and CGPA appears to serve a similar purpose, they differ and are evaluated separately and with different approaches. SGPA is the acronym for Sessional Grade Point Average or Semester End Grade Point Average. It is the grade point average that is gauged when an academic session ends, like a year at school or a semester at college. CGPA is the acronym used for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It depicts the total marks we score in an entire academic session or a particular time, such as the first year, second year, or third year in college. The total marks in all the years of college or half-yearly exams in school are considered collectively to determine the value of the CGPA scored in that academic session. The fundamental difference between Sessional Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average is that we determine the value of CGPA at the academic session considering various SGPAs of different semesters or terms.

Finding out CGPA from SGPA

According to the explanation of SGPA and CGPA, CGPA can be called collective SGPAs determined at the end of the academic year. To gauge your CGPA, you need to consider your average marks in all subjects in each semester i.e., SGPA. Later, add the SGPAs of all the semesters or sessions to estimate your CGPA for the academic year.

For example

If a student attains 9 and 8 SGPA in their two semesters, their CGPA would come out as

CGPA of 1 college academic term = (SGPA of semester 1 + SGPA of semester 2)/2

= (9+8)/2 = 17/2

=8.5

Finding out the Percentage from SGPA

After knowing the calculation of CGPA from SGPA, let us now see how to gauge percentages from SGPA through similar methods.

SGPA to Percentage Calculator

For example

SGPA of a student for 4 semester = 7.8, 6.7, 7.4, 8.9

=7.8+6.7+7.4+8.9= 30.8

=30.8/4 =7.7

(7.7 x 10) - 7.5 = 77-7.7= 69.3%

What is SGPA?

SGPA is the acronym for Sessional Grade Point Average or Semester End Grade Point Average. Before we talk about SGPA and CGPA, let’s first know what they are.

The marks we gain in our schools and colleges can be evaluated in several ways. One of these approaches comprises SGPA. The grade point average is determined at the end of an academic session, such as a year at school or a semester at college. First, add the grade points of all the subjects in an academic session or year and calculate their average. This average is the SGPA for that specific session or year.

What is CGPA?

It is another popular way to gauge the marks of students in their schools and colleges CGPA is the acronym used for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It depicts the total marks we gain in a complete academic session or a specific time period. It can be the first year, second year, or third year in college. The total marks we gain in all the years of college or half-yearly exams in school are considered to determine the CGPA scored in that academic session.

The fundamental difference between Sessional Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average is that we determine the value of CGPA at the academic session considering various SGPAs of different semesters or terms.

Calculation of SGPA

After knowing what is SGPA, let’s learn the method to gauge its value. A semester of Sessional Grade Point Average (SGPA) reflects a student’s performance over a prearranged time phase, typically a semester. To gauge the value of SGPA, you need to consider the credit points scored in a semester and then divide for sum by the total credit points of the semester.

Explanation of how to find out SGPA

  • First of all, multiply the credit Point of each subject by the grade point you have gained in the subject.
  • Secondly, add all the total grade points you have gained.
  • Finally, divide the aggregate by the absolute sum of the credit points for the semester. This way, you will get the value of your SGPA.

Example

Subject A: 9; Subject B: 7; Subject C: 6

Now, suppose the credit points for these subjects as-

Subject X: 4; Subject Y: 5; Subject Z: 6

Firstly, multiply your grade points by their specific credits:

Subject X: 9 x 4= 36

Subject Y: 7 x 5= 35

Subject Z: 6 x 6= 36

Now, add up the grade points: 36+35+36 = 107 and credit points: 4+5+6= 15

To gauge your SGPA, divide the total sum of grade points by the total of credit points: 107/14

=7.13

Hopefully, we have helped you know the methods to calculate CGPA and SGPA.
