Bruno Laeng, Shoaib Nabil, and Akiyoshi Kitaoka conducted research that included the optical illusion. Kitaoka is a psychologist at Ritsumeikan University in Kobe, Japan, and Laeng and Nabil are psychologists at the University of Oslo in Norway. "The Eye Pupil Adjusts to Illusorily Expanding Holes," according to the report.

The post has approximately 5,200 upvotes and over 100 comments since it was shared. The numbers appear to be steadily rising.
