Important Question from chapter 4 : Thinkers, beliefs and buildings.

Q-Discuss the development in sculpture and architecture associated with the rise of Vaishnavism and Shaivism.

A- Hinduism is divided into two branches: Vaishnavism and Shaivism. Lord Vishnu was regarded as the supreme deity in Vaishnavism. Lord Shiva was worshipped as the supreme deity of Shaivism. The Bhakti movement included both traditions. The Bhakti movement emphasised the devotee's love and devotion to God.

The architectural and art traditions were influenced by Vaishnavism and Shaivism. The domestic deities were created in temples. The first temples were tiny and straightforward. Garbhagriha was the name of the little room. Later, the garbhagriha was extended, and a tall structure was constructed on top of it. It was called Shikhara. The temple's walls were adorned with suitors. For the comfort of guests, temples with large entrances and large halls were soon built.

Many of these temples were hewn out of solid rock. These man-made caves were converted into temples. The tradition of article caves dates back to those who have given up the world. The Ajivikas, who grew into a sect under Asoka's reign, were the most important. The Kailash Nath temple, built in the eighth century, is a good example of a rock-cut temple. It was carved from a single block of stone. The sculptor shouts, "How did I produce it!" on a copper plate inscription in the temple of Ellora. Sculpture was another form of artistic expression. In the sculpture, deities were given a variety of shapes and forms. Shiva has taken the form of a Linga. Many deities have appeared in many shapes, some of which are bizarre.
