Important Question from chapter 10 : Colonialism and the countryside

Q-Why did the Santhals rebel against British rule?

A- The Santhals had settled in the Damin-i-Koh region by 1832. Their settlement grew quickly. To make room for them, forests were removed. The Company benefited as well, as it received an increasing amount of land revenue. The Santhals, on the other hand, were unsatisfied as well. They rose up in opposition to British rule. The following are the key reasons behind their uprising.

1. Santhals were dissatisfied with the company's tax policy. They believed the land revenue rates were excessive and exploitative.

2. As a result of British policy, the Zamindars began to exert increasing influence over the lands brought under cultivation by Santhals. Santhals, on the other hand, were enraged.

3. The Santhals viewed moneylenders in rural areas as villains and agents of Company rule. In the event that a borrower defaults, moneylenders may auction the Santhals' land. The Santhals were not pleased with any of this.

Later, the British took attempts to appease the Santhals. Santhal Pargana was created as a separate area, and a statute was passed to safeguard the santhals.
