Today’s blog will highlight the opportunities available to girls on clearing the UPSC CDS exam:
Year 1992, proved to be a landmark in the history of Indian Army with the induction of women into the officer cadre. Such was the beginning that today we have more than 1200 Lady Cadets, already been commissioned into the various Arms and Services of the Indian Army. However, under the UPSC CDS exam girls are only eligible for Officers Training Academy (OTA). The rest of the three academies are restricted for boys only.
Once the training of selected lady cadets is done at Officers Training Academy they become eligible for a better pay scale under the 7th pay commission. Apart from handsome salary they also become eligible for allowances like: Highly Active Field Area Allowance, Compensatory Modified Field Area Allowance, Compensatory Field Area Allowance, High Altitude Allowance, Dearness Allowances(DA), Kit Maintenance Allowance, Uniform Allowance, etc.
In today’s world girls are trying to match boys’ footprints in no matter whatever the field is. This has been depicted by the increase in the number of women CDS exam entries each year.
In the recent CDS 1 exam 2020, Shruti, an ILS Law College student topped among all the girls who appeared for this exam. She had a dream of joining Indian armed forces which she accomplished by keeping herself updated on current affairs and studying dedicatedly for 6-7 hours per day. Following Shruti, is Kiran Raut, an MSC student from Sir Parshurambhau college, who stood fourth in UPSC CDS exam among girl candidates.
It’s not limited to the cracking of the CDs exam, women like Anjana Bhaduria, who became the first women officer to win a gold medal have proved that even in defence services there’s no looking back for female candidates. She was a part of the first-ever batch of female cadets at the officers’ training academy (OTA).
Some other examples of lady defence officers who did extremely well in their careers include:
- Colonel Mithali Madhumithia: she is the first ever women officer to win a gallantry award. Mithali was commissioned in the year 2000.
- Swati Singh: An engineer, deployed at the Nathu La pass as signals- in- charge. Swati is the first and only female officer located at that pass.
- Divya Ajith Kumar: commissioned in the year 2010, she led the all-women contingent of 154 women cadets in the 2015 republic day parade.
