The International Cricket Council's (ICC) World Test Championship is a Test cricket league tournament that began on August 1, 2019. It is designed to be the main Test cricket competition.

It is consistent with the ICC's vision of having one peak competition for each of the three international cricket formats. The 2019 Ashes series kicked off the opening tournament. Matches were halted in March 2020 owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, and will not resume until July 2020, with several rounds of matches postponed or canceled. When it was decided that the series between South Africa and Australia would not be played, New Zealand became the first side to qualify for the final, followed by India. The first World Test Championship Final was held on June 18, 2021, at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England, between India and New Zealand. Despite rain canceling the first and fourth days of the final, New Zealand won in the final session of the reserve day and took home the inaugural World Test Championship trophy.
