India has a coastline of 7,516.6 kilometers and forms one of the largest peninsulas in the world.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, about 95% of India’s trade by volume and 68% by value goes through maritime transport.
It is served by 13 major ports (12 public and one private) and 187 notified small and intermediate ports.
Port Blair, which was notified as a major port in 2010, has recently been withdrawn from its status.
The following states have a total of 200 major and non-major ports:
Maharashtra (53);
Gujarat (40);
Tamil Nadu (15);
Karnataka (10)

There are 13 major ports in the country; 6 on the east coast and 7 on the west coast.
Major ports account for 58% of the total cago shipped from Indian ports.
The 9 main Indian states are Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
These handle the largest volume of freight and container traffic.
Of the 13 ports, 12 are owned by the government and one port, the Tamil Nadu port of Ennore is owned by legal entities.

In February 2021, the Indian Parliament passed the Major Ports Authority Bill 2020.
The bill aims to decentralize decision-making and strengthen excellence in the governance of major ports.
