NASA Images of Pluto
Pluto's surface is complex and varied, with jumbled mountains resembling those on Europa, networks of carved-out valleys, older, deeply cratered terrain next to more recent, smooth, frozen plains, and even what appear to be wind-blown dunes, according to a NASA report.
Mission to New Horizons
- The first mission to examine Pluto and the Kuiper Belt in space, New Horizons, was launched in 2006. Launched on January 19, 2006, the mission.
- In February 2007, the New Horizons spacecraft swung by Jupiter for a gravity boost and scientific investigations.
- In 2015, it carried out a six-month flyby survey of Pluto and its moons, making its closest approach on July 14.
- The spacecraft is slated to move further into the enigmatic Kuiper Belt to study another of the old, ice mini-worlds, at least a billion miles beyond Neptune's orbit, as it continues its exploration of the area. Final approval is pending for the mission.
