Before getting into the details of the CBSE Exam Pattern for Class 10 and Class 12, let’s have an overview of changes made in the CBSE exam Pattern:
- As per the CBSE Exam Pattern, the Board will follow competency-based multiple-choice questions.
- Both Term-1 and Term-2 Exam will be based on the 50% CBSE Class 10 and Class 12 Syllabus.
- Internal Assessment for Class 10 and Class 12 will cover marks for Unit tests, Exploratory activities, Practical exams and Projects.
- The exam duration will be 90 minutes.
- According to the revised CBSE Exam Pattern 2021-22, candidates will be evaluated throughout the year regardless of Term 1 and 2.

CBSE Exam Pattern for Class 10
Let’s have a detailed look at CBSE New Exam Pattern for Class 10.
The total marks for internal assessment are 20 and it is divided into 4 sections:
1) Periodic Test – 5 Marks: There will be a total of 3 Periodic Tests conducted for each subject. Out of 3 Periodic Tests, an average of two tests will be taken for final submission. The Periodic Test carries 5 marks out of the 20 marks for Internal Assessment.
2) Multiple Assessment – 5 Marks: Apart from the Periodic Tests, the CBSE has given authority to the school officials to conduct assessments in other modes depending on the subject. Multiple Assessment includes Oral Test, Group/Individual Assessment, Maps, Graphics, Activities, Assignments, etc., Multiple Assessment carries 5 marks.
3) Portfolio – 5 Marks: A portfolio is nothing but the work done by the student. This portfolio consists of the work done by the student and includes the efforts, progress, growth, achievements of the student. The portfolio includes the following elements based on which the student will be assessed:
- Design of the work: This includes neatness, visual appeal, and creativity
- Completion of guided work focused on specific curricular objectives
- Student’s knowledge
- Formation of all relevant work (Completeness)
4) Subject Enrichment Activities – 5 Marks: This carries another 5 marks and assesses the practical, project works and language skills of a student.
The subject improvement activity is different for different subjects.
For example, for language subjects, listening, speaking skills, vocabulary will be assessed whereas, for Maths and Science, the practical works will be examined.
For a subject like Social Science, some relevant project work like a map will be evaluated.

CBSE Exam Pattern for Class 10: Overview
For Class 10 Term 1 and Term 2 subjects, the total marks are 100 for each subject.
1) 80 Marks (40 marks in each term theory board examination for all subjects)
- Passing marks: 33%
2) 20 Marks (Internal Assessment – 10 marks in each term for all subjects)
- Passing marks: 33%
3) For each subject, both grades and marks will be awarded.
4) 9-point grading system would be followed.

CBSE Exam Pattern for Class 12: Overview
For Class 12 Term 1 and Term 2 subjects, the total marks are 100 for each subject.
- Number of Questions: 50 Questions
- Question Type and Duration: According to the updated CBSE Exam Pattern, the examination will be 2 hours long if the COVID-19 continues to prevail and will include case-based/situation-based, open-ended- short answer/ long answer type questions. In case the situation is not conducive for normal descriptive examination a 90 minute MCQ based exam will be conducted at the end of Term II also.
- The medium of Examination: The question paper will be available in either Hindi or English. The regional languages is an optional language paper for the candidates and it shall not be the common medium of examination
- Marking Scheme: MCQs will carry one mark for each question.
- Negative marking: There is no negative marking for any subject in CBSE class 12 Term 2 board examination
