What is CUET:
Till recent times, top central universities used to take admissions in their UG and PG Courses by conducting their own exams or through merit based on 12th class marks. However, in a move that could be a potential game-changer for higher education in India, the government has recommended conducting a Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
There are more than 80 universities and colleges for the academic session 2022-2023. This may come as a surprise to many, but the move aimed at reducing the pressure of higher cut-offs in most of the reputed central universities has been in the talks for a long time. However, the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to bring radical changes to the education set up in the country, paved the way for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
There are 45 Central Universities in India at the moment including the top universities like University of Delhi (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in CUET, however, in future years it is expected that there will be more universities included to take admissions through CUET.
CUET will be the mandatory admission test for universities established under an Act of Parliament and are under the control and purview of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. In 2009, Parliament passed the Central Universities Act, which paved the way for the creation of 16 Central Universities in addition to the existing ones, to give representation to all states.
As of now, there are 54 central universities in India. The 54 Central Universities together offer close to 1.68 Lac seats under various disciplines at the undergraduate level. The admissions to most universities hitherto done based on merit (class XII marks) will come under the purview of CUET.
Some of the reasons why CUET is important are listed below:
1. Balanced Opportunity for Each Student
With the inception of CUET, the students who cannot score good in 12th class will still have a chance to score high in CUET exam and get admission in their dream university. There could still be the weightage of 12th class marks, however universities will have to have minimum 50% weightage of the CUET exam in their merit-based admission process.
2. End of Subject Bias
When wondering "Why CUET is Important?", one strong answer to it is the end to subject bias. Students scoring high in their domain subject in CUET exam, can get admission in that Subject honors. However, earlier, scoring low in other subjects would diminish the chances of getting admission in the subject of choice, even if the student scored high in that subject in 12th class.
3. Clarity of Rank
With the introduction of CUET, it is quite expected that students will no longer be vague about their ranks and the colleges they will be eligible for. The CUET ranking will give the students a clear idea about their preference and thus they can focus on getting admission to the particular college without any hassle and confusion.
4. End of cut-off Wrestling
The very popular system of cut-off of some universities will come to an end. No doubt, CUET will probably create its own dimensions of a rush but the chaos of cut-off will be over. It is the time student’s aspirations will be on priority and CUET will ensure a fair mechanism for the students to get admission in the colleges/universities of their choice.
5. Equal Opportunity for Each University
With CUET coming in picture, all the universities will get good opportunity to get good students from all over. It is going to be a win-win for both students and universities.
Who needs to appear in CUET 2023:
12th Class Students or 12th pass out students seeking admissions in UG courses and graduate students seeking admissions in PG course will require to appear in CUET exam to get admission in the college/university and course of their choice.
